Fad or Fab: Is Patterned Tile Staying In Style?

Here today gone tomorrow, or will patterned tile stand the test of time...?

When you begin a kitchen or bath remodel, you’re sure to have a lot of questions:

  • Is this too trendy?
  • Will I still like this in a couple of years?
  • Will my bathroom or kitchen look dated and I’ll wonder what was I thinking?

So the question is, fad or fab: is patterned tile a style that’s here to stay? Ultimately, it does come down to your personal style, but here at the Cabinet Chic, we say a resounding, yes, go for it! Let’s take a look at some great reasons to add patterned tile into your space:

Patterned Tile: Trendy or Timeless?

If you were to travel to Italy or another Mediterranean locale, you would notice that patterned tiles are the norm rather than the exception. There you will see patterns that are both bold and beautiful and can be found in hotels, restaurants, and boutiques. Patterned tiles add a timeless charm to any space! Patterned tiles have been very popular in the last few years but it doesn’t mean that it is a short-lived fad. You’ll find patterned tiles at the ancient ruins of Pompei! Definitely not a fad!

The real question is, “how can you make patterned tile

become a timeless feature in my home?”

Is Trendy Ever a Bad Thing?

Ultimately, it comes down to personal choice whether you care if something is trendy or not. The biggest thing to keep in mind with any home renovation project is, “Do I really love this?”If you think about it, nothing in design or fashion isn’t necessarily, “new.” Ideas are often recycled and reimagined. In our design opinion, trendy isn’t bad. But, longevity should be a consideration since remodels can get costly. The real question is, “how can you make patterned tile become a timeless feature in my home?”

“Pattern and color are individual and specific like each client. You have to love bold and patterns to use bold patterns- from the backsplash to counter to color on cabinets. Just because it’s on TV or online doesn't mean each person is going to love living with too much pattern or color.
Backsplashes are a great way to add a lot of accent or detail and they can be really dramatic. Work with someone who can get you the impact you want and see if it works for you.”

Things to Consider When Adding Patterned Tile To Your Space

Does the tile complement the style of your home?

It’s important when selecting patterned tile for your home to consider the style of your home, the time period that it was built, and your personal design aesthetic. If your house is a ranch style that was built in the 1950s or 60s, geometric patterned tile would be a great addition! Now, geometric style might look out of place in a colonial, cabin, or English Tudor. Choosing something to fit the style of your home is key to adding timeless charm to your home!

Quality, Quality, Quality!

We’re no design snobs, but the reality is, you get what you pay for! Quality tile is worth the extra expense when you are renovating a custom kitchen or bath. The better the quality, the higher the craftsmanship which allows for a more timeless, enduring look for patterned tile!

Consider the Color Palette

While colorful patterned tile is beautiful, you need to decide if the colorful tiles will be what you will love for a long time. A splash of color is on-trend and can really elevate a space, however, keeping to neutrals when it comes to patterned tiles in the kitchen or bathroom is a great way to go because you have more design options like choosing a bold wall or cabinet color. We believe black and white are a great choice for patterned tiles that will fit any design aesthetic, but if you have your heart set on color, keep the color palette light with two colors, otherwise, it can become overwhelming.

If you really want a splash of color, consider adding it to your backsplash where it can really shine! Bottom line: Simplicity, even with a pattern, lends itself to being more timeless. One of our favorite local interior designers weighs in:

"100%, “all day long” with the bold colored backsplashes. Not necessarily for the entire backsplash, but at least behind the hood area.
While we tend to keep our kitchen cabinets clean and simple, the backsplash is an area we can really display our love of color, texture, and shape. These days I gravitate towards the patterned cement tiles. They are a true statement piece."
