Keeping it Contemporary: Tips for Modern Kitchens

With high tech appliances and a streamlined clean look, modern kitchens are a very popular design aesthetic! The Cabinet Chic loves to deliver on this look, but what makes a modern kitchen design? While you might have some ideas, the pros at C & C Cabinets discuss how to create your dream modern kitchen, whether it is ultra-modern, or a laid back contemporary style! Read on for our top 7 tips on a modern kitchen remodel...

Designing a Custom Modern Kitchen

Elements of a contemporary kitchen include very clean, sleek lines, unique cabinet hardware, and flat fronts in a material like birch or bamboo. Here are our custom cabinetry designer tips to achieve a modern kitchen aesthetic:

Go for Geometrics + Streamlined Appeal

Geometry plays a big part in the design of a modern kitchen; the majority of modern style kitchens have this hallmark. Generally, you will see simple shapes such as squares and rectangles. When it comes to the cabinetry (as we call it the foundation design element), this means flat cabinet doors are used versus more traditional or ornate engraved options. Sleek, clean lines signify as "modern” kitchen design. The keyword to remember here is “streamlined.” A modern kitchen should be sleek and clean without any extra frills!

Include a Showstopping Piece

Clean and streamlined doesn’t mean you can’t have a showstopper. Our design team likes to give your kitchen design some personality with a showstopping piece. This could be your flooring, light fixtures, appliances, cabinetry, or even countertops. Just don’t overdo it. Keep the word ‘streamlined’ in the back of your mind with all design decisions, especially for modern kitchen design.

Choose Appliances + Sink Early

Appliances have a big impact on the layout of your kitchen. When designing a kitchen, don’t just measure the width of your dream appliances and sink. Check the depth of everything and leave clearance for door openings. Trust us, this will save you from a headache in the future! Don’t skimp on ventilation. People often forget that a range needs a vent, so be sure to include space for that in your design. Shop for your sink early too. You’ll thank us later. At C & C Cabinets, we are pleased to offer in-home and onsite consultation for cabinet design services complete with computerized renderings. We’ll make sure it all fits and gives the modern look you’re after. Call us today to get started!  (813) 876-6780

Make Design Choices Upfront

Your family will spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so we know you’ll want to get the design right. That’s why, it’s best to make your design choices upfront, rather than making a costly spur of the moment decision in the future. Have a plan A and B just in case so you’ll be prepared and will end up with a modern look you’ll love. You can keep a journal or notebook of favorite finishes, paints, samples, etc. Or create a Pinterest board for both options. Or better yet, get a sample of each design element and keep them together in a bag or box, so you can mix and match design elements. Like a puzzle, it’ll all come together in the end! Elements to keep in mind and have a clear vision for before beginning your new kitchen design or renovation:

  • Tiles/flooring
  • Cabinets
  • Countertops
  • Appliances
  • Hardware for drawers and cabinets
  • Paint colors
  • Lighting

We recommend you go from the floor up when you can to make the design choices and layout easier for your new kitchen!

Embrace Drawers

For a sleek modern look, opting for drawers rather than a whole kitchen full of cabinets can be amazing! Deep below-the-counter drawers can fit your biggest pots and pans, plates, and storage containers. If you’re renovating an older kitchen, you may notice lower cabinets with shelves, but custom drawers are an easy upgrade that will make your everyday life easier and more organized in the future! Choose the Cabinet Chic for all your custom cabinet and drawer needs! Each project is made to order “from scratch” and manufactured using carb compliant plywood and hardwood materials according to our client’s design, specifications, and preferences.

Choose Neutral Colors

White is hugely popular in modern kitchen design, but modern doesn’t have to be stark white! Stick to neutrals like black, wood-tone brown, or gray and you will still be in the modern aesthetic! Stainless steel appliances and quartz or marble countertops are a go-to for many modern kitchens, so choosing a color scheme that complements or matches will work best.

Include Something Natural

Modern doesn’t have to be sterile. Include something natural in your modern design whether it is wood, leather, or a nice green plant. Natural elements will warm up and add contrast to a modern contemporary kitchen. We love the trend of open shelving to show off a minimal collection of your favorite tools, plates, and decor.
